In principle, this is the luxury cuvee from the vineyards of Haut-Bergey. The spectacular 2000 Branon is one of the exceptional efforts of Pessac-Leognan, and the 2001 is outstanding. Aromas of melted licorice, smoke, crushed stones, truffles, and black currants are followed by an elegant, medium to full-bodied, pure, dense wine with no hard edges. It should evolve quickly, and drink well for 12-13 years.
Errata notice: In issue 152, I indicated that Jean-Luc Thunevin had helped in crafting this wine. That is an error. Branon is looked after exclusively by the brilliant Michel Rolland.
