The 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru was probably one of the last vineyards picked in the Côte de Nuits, on Saturday 8 October after La Paulée. It has an attractive, slightly more exotic bouquet than the premier crus with black plum, briary, orange pith and a touch of brine, all very well defined. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannin, finely pitched acidity with a caressing finish that gently fans out in nonchalant fashion. This is a very well-crafted Mazoyères that just has the edge over the Mazis at the moment.
Reduction though this appears to be quite ripe. Otherwise there is excellent mid-palate concentrated and richness to the full-bodied and robust flavors that possess a supple mid-palate that contrasts with the muscular, sappy and markedly firm finish that flirts with rusticity but not really austerity.
