Mazy Chambertin, Domaine Joseph Roty 2018

Tasting Notes

(Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru, Domaine Joseph Roty, Red) The Roty holding is in the lower part of Mazis-Chambertin, next to Dugat-Py. Rich imperial dark purple, this has a wonderful intensity of very dark yet balanced fruit with a crisp minerality, and such a heavenly hedonistic follow through. Hard to see how this could be more impressive.

(Domaine Joseph Roty Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru Red) Not too surprisingly given the close proximity of the two vineyards, this is aromatically similar to the Fontenys save for having more obvious sauvage hints and slightly more evident wood influence as well. The muscular yet seductively textured larger-scaled flavors possess more power and density, all wrapped in a robust, focused and very firm finish. This is definitely a wine of contrasts as the seductive mid-palate is quite texturally different from the bold built-to-age finale. This should age effortlessly for years (Drink starting 2036)

The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berry fruit, woodsmoke, plums, dark chocolate, licorice and spices. Full-bodied and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with a muscular, introverted profile and a long, lively finish. This is a serious, structured Mazis from Roty, and it will take time to show all its cards.
