Opening in the glass with scents of pear, orange oil, toasted nuts and white flowers, the 2020 Pouilly-Fuissé Le Haut de la Roche is medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping, with a layered core of fruit, lively acids and a mouthwatering finish.
This special new wine is born from the 1er Cru classication in 2020. Some superb vineyards, such as this portion at the top of Roche de Vergisson, have not been classified as premier cru. In this instance, it is because the vineyard is too high in altitude. With global warming, some might consider this to in fact be advantageous. The exposure is south-east, with very stony and strongly chalky soils. Jean-Marie believes this to be great terroir (better than some given 1er cru status). Previously, these grapes would have gone into La Roche. This plot was picked at the very end of the harvest with low yields and great density. Composed of only free run juice, it was vinified entirely in barrels (25% new). Fermentation finished in mid-November ahead of 8 months maturation in barrels with frequent lees stirring. Fresh and bright on the nose, with elegant ripe citrus and juicy pears layered with hints of struck flint and gentle spicing. The palate is lively with acidity, full of freshly cut green and stone fruit. This is elegant, lifted and fleet-footed, bolstered by hints of cream and riper stone fruit. This spritely, chalky, vibrant wine is very moreish and approachable, with a cool, long and driven finish.
