**Note: from .25 ha parcel of 60+ year old vines planted at a density of 14,000/ha in Mazis-Bas - vinified with 95% stems**
Mazis is typically not a wine that I describe as aromatically elegant but this particular example is in fact just that, combining as it does brooding notes of violet, spice, rose petal, sandalwood and Asian tea scents though the more typical nuances of game, earth and underbrush are present as well. The muscular and imposingly concentrated flavors are borderline painfully intensity with ample minerality suffusing the mid-palate and continuing onto the explosively long, powerful and built-to-age, indeed even chewy finish that also reflects a touch of warmth. Don't even consider opening a bottle before its 10th birthday.
The 2015 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru is a monument in the making, opening in the glass with a deep and complex bouquet of dark berries, cassis, wild rose, dark chocolate, grilled venison and currant leaf. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, powerful and multidimensional, with profound depth at the core and incredible energy and textural finesse despite all its immense concentration and substance, unfurling over the tongue like a roll of velvet. The finish is searingly intense. Like the Lavaux Saint-Jacques and the Evocelles, this Mazis-Chambertin stands out for its bright vertical line, and Loïc Dugat-Py observes that for them this grand cru is a cooler terroir. A dozen years of patience will be essential.
The 2015 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru includes 100% whole bunch fruit this year. It had a very broody bouquet andis much more sultry than the Mazoyeres-Chambertin, well defined with cold limestone notes coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, more masculine than the other grand crus, quite serious to the point of being saturnine, but focused and quite persistent on the aftertaste.

While the nose is somewhat atypical the palate impression is textbook Mazis.
