Tasting Notes

A strikingly and—for this cépage—unusually citric nose and palate encompass kumquat and pineapple for a piquant and tangy yet tropical, lusciously ripe impression; nor does this wine want in the least for palpable density. And all of this has been achieved at a modest 12.7% alcohol, lending a remarkable sense of lift. The finish here is clear and ringing, introducing site-typical pepper and tobacco while offering crystalline stoniness, floral perfume and green herbal essences. “It’s the lightest Grüner Veltliner Smaragd I have ever bottled,” notes Lucas Pichler, and I’m confident we’d have to go well back in estate history to find a lower-alcohol exemplar rendered by his father. Bottled in early August, this spent May and June in cask, but was otherwise in tank.
