One of the cru bourgeois estates in the empire of Bernard Magrez, this may possibly be the best wine Les Grands Chenes has yet made. From old vines (average age 45) in the very northern part of the Medoc, the final blend of 51% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Cabernet Franc hit 14% natural alcohol. The wine displays loads of espresso roast, black chocolate, creme de cassis, forest floor and tobacco leaf in a full-bodied, opulent, and flamboyant style. Dense, rich and deep in fruit, it exhibits the plush, silky tannins that are a signature of Michel Rolland, the overall consultant for all of the Magrez estates. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
A blend of 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, cropped between 30th September and the 16th October, this has a ripe, almost exotic coconut tinged nose with red-cherries, cassis, blueberry and a touch of vanilla. Good definition. The palate is full-bodied with very ripe tannins, a nice citric edge cutting through those thick layers of black fruits, although the finish is rather brutish and showing just a little warmth of alcohol at the moment. Tasted March 2010
An attractive Medoc, with mineral and currant character. Medium-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and a medium finish.
Magrez wine. Black! Some freshness on the nose. Then tar on the palate. Painful end. Very drying. Not comfortable to taste. Date tasted 28th March 2010. Drink 2012-2015.
Good crushed berry fruit, fleshy and ripe with good tannins. Drink 2012-16.
Proprietor Bernard Magrez has fashioned a big time sleeper of the vintage composed of 58% Merlot and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon. It reveals a dense purple color as well as a powerful nose of black currants, licorice, and camphor, full body, and 6-8 years of drinkability. (Tasted once.) Drink 2010-2018.
Robert Parker added an asterisk to this wine score to signify that it is a wine he considers has the finest potential of all the offerings he has ever tasted from this estate in nearly 32 years of barrel tasting samples in Bordeaux.
