Puligny Champs Gain, Francois Carillon 2019

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Champ Gain 1er Cru is detailed and mineral-driven. A touch of wet limestone emerges with aeration, more austere than Vougeraie's Champ Gain. The palate is taut and fresh on the entry. A silver bead of acidity runs throughout this Puligny, and it imparts wonderful tension and sharpness. A slight touch of heat on the finish forces me to dock a point, but otherwise, this is a fine and feisty Puligny. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Mid lemon yellow, a light reduction, but otherwise a clean-cut attractive bouquet. This is certainly the most elegant wine of the first Puligny flight, perhaps the only one. The fruit is unquestionably ripe, but with adequate acidity and the true backbone of a classical hillside Puligny shows. Medium to long finish. Drink from 2025-2030.
