Spatburgunder Alexander Die Grossen, Jean Stodden, Das Rotweingut 2020

Tasting Notes

An incredible story that is matched by what is in the glass. On 14th July 2021 devastating floods destroyed vineyards, roads and buildings in the Ahr region, and completely flooden Stodden's cellar. This wiped records of which wines were in each barrel. Alexander die Grossen comes from the best barrel tastings from wines that were clearly of Grosses Gewachs level - this blend the creme de la creme from Stodden's cellar. Mid ruby colour, the wine is immensely rich and powerful on the nose, with a flinty reduction and gamey wood smoke note underneath pure cherry fruit. Stony and rich on the palate, this is a vin de garde that is tightly wound for now. Smoky, rich and dense, this powerful Pinot Noir is immensely impressive, with a very long finish. It will need time in bottle to reveal its full potential.
