Barreiros Mencia, Pago de los Abuelos 2019

Tasting Notes

From a vineyard planted in 1890 on slate soils with a slope of 30% at 450m above sea level. Mid ruby in colour. Smoky, seductive liquorice, wood smoke and tobacco come through with supple red cherry and blueberry on the nose. The tannins are polished and give the fruit a glossy sheen. The smoky, spicy tones add complexity and depth, with notes of nutmeg, sage and clove. Long and spicy on the finish.

100% Mencía. Planted on a 35% sloping plot. Vineyard from 1890 bought from ‘a grandfather of a friend’. Destemmed and not crushed. Short carbonic maceration of 24 hours. When half-fermented the wine is racked off and grapes are pressed. It finishes the fermentation in barrel. 12 months in barrel. Nacho Álvarez is the winemaker, from Bierzo. Production: 1,000 bottles.
Fluid, fine and delicate. This is the kind of Bierzo wine we want. Airy, delicate and subtle, but with a lot of depth. One of the finest you can find in Bierzo with extraordinary delicacy. Singular. (FC)
