Tasting Notes

This is a mind flip, showing perfectly placed reduction and such completely ripe fruit. There’s a spicy edge to the fresh limes and lemons. Some pastry, too. Exceptionally fresh and complex with such intense lime essence and a very long line of acidity, wrapped in lees-derived texture. Smoothly honed, long and seamless. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

The Australian face of the Loosen/Barry collaboration. Ernie selected a patch of south-facing vines and wild-fermented and matured the wine in a foudre (shipped from his cellar) for 12 months, then 10 months in tank. Magic in the mouth; simply beautiful. Its vinification looks back centuries to when German Riesling was released after 50 years’ maturation.

Very light to pale colour. The bouquet is curiously sweaty and reductive, with slaty mineral notes and the entire package is reserved and backward in development. Very fine, elusive perfumes. The palate is very slightly off-dry and deftly combines delicacy and intensity. A thoroughly delicious, beguiling, mouthwatering riesling that totally belies its Clare Valley origins. An exciting wine. A real stunner.

Very pale greenish straw (Clare wines seem paler than German ones). Very pretty nose and beautifully balanced. I think the Wolta Wolta may be my favourite of these Loosen collaborations. Great steely Riesling character perfectly balanced by fresh acidity. It probably won't last nearly as long as the German trio but is the most fun to drink now. 2019 - 2025
