Tasting Notes

There are 8,000 bottles of the brilliant 2020 Saint-Véran Lieu (Inter)dit, a blend of lieux-dits Côte-Rôtie and Terres Noires. Bursting with aromas of citrus oil, fresh bread, mandarin orange, pastry and Asian pear, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with a satiny attack that segues into a concentrated, seamless mid-palate. This is always a terrific cuvée, but the 2020 rendition is especially good.

This cuvée comes mainly from the "Côte Rôtie" vineyard in the village of Davayé, but also from the "Terres Noires" - one of the most beautiful terroirs here. The Terres Noires produce rich and full-bodied wines, while the Côte Rôtie brings tension and minerality. This cuvée, produced only with free run juices, was vinified in barrels (25% new). Alcoholic fermentation took place until the end of December. Ageing lasted about 7 months with frequent lees stirring. A stunning, structured wine in 2020, the nose here is subtle and complex. Initially revealing lemon peel and salty preserved lemon notes, with time riper peach fruit and toasted spices come through. The palate is chiselled and chalky, the bold structure framing the intense, vibrant fruit beautifully. Driven by citrus but layered with white stone fruit, the added hints of spice and struck flint build through the mid palate. There is great depth here, showcased by the powerful and expansive finish. This warrants a year in bottle before approaching, but is one of the highlights in an excellent line-up. Outstanding.
