Alte Reben La Borne Versteigerung, Weingut Wittmann 2019

Tasting Notes

Floral with a pronounced, licorice note. Great structure that might be a bit too much for some at this stage. However, we are delighted by it and suggest you will also enjoy the stunningly chalky finish. Great potential. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Better from 2021.

The 2019 Riesling Alte Reben La Borne is, like the Morstein, more dusty than fruity and is as rich and intense as it is pure, limey and stony. Complex, tight and tensioned as well as fresh and vital, with lots off lemon flavors, this is a long-distance runner with remarkable finesse and tension and stimulating salinity. Again, this is a twin of the Morstein yet with the finessed genetics of the Brunnenhäuschen. Tasted as a sample in April 2020.

(Wittmann Riesling Trocken Alte Reben La Borne Auction) AP: 24 20. The 2019er “La Borne” Riesling Alte Reben, as it is referred to on the consumer label, comes from a parcel planted with old vines in the Grand Cru Westhofener Morstein. It offers a quite reserved yet deeply complex and layered nose of white peach, mint, candied grapefruit, smoke, and dried herbs. The wine is beautifully zesty, pure, and vibrating on the palate. The wine develops great presence and grip as it unfolds on the palate but leaves one with a superb feel of lightness and freshness in the very long and elegant finish. A delightful tartness coupled with a fine sense of zest adds depth and energy to the aftertaste. This magical expression of La Borne may well be the Estate’s finest to date: It is that remarkable. 2025-2039
