Gevrey Chambertin Coeur du Roy, Domaine Dugat-Py 2019

Tasting Notes

Always the richest and most muscular of Dugat-Py's communal bottlings, the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Coeur du Roy unwinds in the glass with aromas of raspberries, plums, forest floor, spices and grilled meats. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and layered, with a broad-shouldered chassis of fine, powdery tannins and lively acids, it's long and penetrating. As usual, it derives from vines between 50 and 109 years of age located in the lieux-dits Epointures, Combe du Dessus, Jouise and Les Marchais, and it was vinified with 60% whole cluster and raised in 50% new oak. Having visited the domaine's vines before harvest, I can attest that its deep, saturated hue comes from an abundance of tiny, shot berries with a high skins-to-juice ratio, rather than to any desire to push extraction in the winery.
