This micro-cuvée is produced from four tiny plots on the Pomerol plateau totalling 1 hectare. One plot is in front of Clinet, one in front of La Fleur Pétrus, one between Le Pin and Trotanoy and the other next to Rouget. This property is owned by Peter Kwok, who bought it as "Cornaline" in 2011. It is produced only in great vintages (no 2013 was produced). Michel Rolland is consulting and Jérôme Aguirre, formerly of La Violette and Le Gay, is the head winemaker. The wine is made from 100% Merlot grapes, is micro-vinified with whole berry fermentation in 100% new oak. Annual production is a miniscule 3000 bottles.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Enclos Tourmaline offers up aromas of plums, wild berries, sweet spices, loamy soil and creamy new oak. Full-bodied, ample and succulent, it's elegantly muscular, with an ample core of fruit, lively acids and powdery tannins. Derived from holdings on the plateau respectively located between Le Pin and Trotanoy, opposite Clinet, and opposite the château of La Fleur-Pétrus, this is the most serious Pomerol in Peter Kwok's portfolio. Drink Date 2025 - 2050

This has rich dark-fruit and smoky character with notes of ripe plums, black olives, spices, cocoa and clay-like soil. Some sweet tobacco, too. Full body, layers of fine, polished tannins and a round, creamy texture. Pure fruit with a touch of blue flowers. Rich and complex, yet fresh and delicious. Long and firm with a polished, earthy finish. Really impressive and rather decadent at the end. Le Pin-like. Try after 2025.

The 2019 Enclos Tourmaline, 100% Merlot, is deep garnet-purple colored. It offers fragrant notes of lavender, menthol, and clove oil over a core of black cherry compote and wild blueberries. The full-bodied palate is tightly knit with lovely tension and beautifully fine-grained tannins, finishing with a floral lift.

The 2019 is 100% Merlot as always, vinified in barrel before a 14 month elevage in 100% new French oak. Deep ruby in colour with an exotic nose of damson, blood orange and liquorice. The palate is oily and dense, rich with ripe black fruits and seamless in tannin. A very hedonistic, impressive and ripe expression without being excessive. Silky and opulent through to the long, smoky and dark-fruited finish.

Farr Vintners, Farr Tasting, May 2020

The 2019 Enclos Tourmaline is a tiny production Pomerol coming from a one-hectare vineyard beside Clinet. It's a rich, powerful, yet incredibly elegant Pomerol that does everything right, offering beautiful cassis and darker cherry fruits, notes of cedarwood, spicy oak, and chocolate, full-bodied richness, silky tannins, and a great finish. It marries opulence with finesse perfectly and is one heck of an impressive Pomerol that can be drunk any time over the coming 25 years or so. Pomerol was one of the standout appellations in 2019, and this shows it.

A dense, very minerally red with iron, dark berries and black olives. Full-bodied and agile. It’s very structured, though not heavy. Opulent, yet reserved.

James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, May 2020

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Enclos Tourmaline sings of cherry, redcurrant jelly, black raspberries, and wild blueberries scents, plus suggestions of candied violets, Sichuan pepper, and forest floor. Full-bodied, the palate is juicy, with loads of red berry sparks and spicy accents, padded with soft tannins, finishing with lovely perfume and freshness.

Coming from the lieu-dit Clinet, close to La Fleur-Pétrus and Trotanoy, the 2019 Enclos Tourmaline is made of 100% Merlot from vines averaging 25 years old planted in blue clay. Yields this year were 32 hectoliters per hectare. The wine was fermented in 100% new oak barrels, where it is currently aging. With 14.5% alcohol and a very deep purple-black color, the nose is already quite profound, giving up scents of blueberry preserves, baked plums and black cherry compote with touches of spice cake, potpourri, fragrant soil, Indian spices and Sichuan pepper. Full-bodied, concentrated and wonderfully decadent in the mouth, the palate reveals lovely freshness and exquisitely plush tannins, finishing with great length and depth.
