Tasting Notes

Aromas of peach, orange oil and almond paste preface the 2019 Saint-Véran Lieu (Inter)dit, a medium to full-bodied, lively but open-knit wine that's elegant and nicely balanced. I suspect that this is another cuvée that I caught in a slightly reticent state and that my score may well seem conservative with a little bottle age. It's a blend based on lieu-dit Côte Rôtie along with some fruit from Terres Noires and Châtaigniers.

From Côte Rotie (the vineyard name being prohibited for a while thanks to an idiotic intervention from the northern Rhône) supplemented by other vineyards such as Les Terres Noires. Beautiful pale primrose. This is really classy, all the opulence you could want, but with backbone. Powerful finish, with a touch of liquorice. A wine that shines over and above the normal class of St-Véran. Tasted: 7/1/2020

As in previous years, this wine comes mainly from the plot : La Côte Rôtie in the village of Davayé with also some old vine fruit from Les Terres Noires which is certainly one of the most beautiful terroirs of Davayé. Les Terres Noires produces rich and opulent wines. La Côte Rôtie brings a tension and a minerality to the wine. As usual, the density is exceptional. This wine was produced only with free run juice and was fermented in barrels with 25% new oak. The alcoholic fermentation took place until the end of December. Further maturation lasted about 7 additional months with some batonnage. Bright, pale lemon in colour in the glass. The nose is lightly reductive with struck flint, but ripe and powerful fruit comes through underneath - fleshy peaches and pineapples. The palate is dense and concentrated, but tightly wound at this stage. With air the oily peaches and lemon curd come through with a hint of passion fruit. There are hints of spice that add accents to this core but they are fine and integrated. There is a rich, creamy texture that builds to a long finish, cut with bright and balancing acidity. Give it 6-12 months to knit together, and enjoy over the following 5+ years.
