Tasting Notes

Notes of sulfur, white flower and citrus rind introduce moderately dense middle weight flavors that possess a sophisticated mouth feel before concluding in an intense, stony and sneaky long finish. I like the balance and while this will need time to develop better depth, the underlying material appears to be present.

Score: 90/93Allen Meadows, Burghound.com (76), October 2019

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet Sous le Puits 1er Cru has a pleasant, crisp Granny Smith–scented bouquet that, frankly, just lacks the verve and class of Guffens’s Mâconnais wines. The palate is balanced with quite a rich, lightly honeyed entry, a fine bead of acidity and a more Chassagne-like finish. Not bad, although there is no question that I’d rather have three cases of his Mâconnais wines for the same price. 2020 - 2028

Score: 89Neal Martin, vinous.com, January 2020

Notes of citrus oil, green apple and a subtle touch of toasted oak introduce the 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Sous Le Puits, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered wine that's lively and nicely balanced.

Score: 89William Kelley, Wine Advocate (244), August 2019

This Premier Cru vineyard is situated at the top of the village of Puligny, near the village of Blagny and is one of the highest of the appellation. The free run juice was fermented in barrels with only 30% new oak. The fermentations ended at the end of November. Elevage continued for a further 8 months with some batonnage. Lemon oil, grapefruit and creamy stone fruits on the nose here. The palate has good tension from the acidity but a textural richness from the batonnage that adds both weight and a savoury edge. Savoury spices pair with notes of pear and white peach that linger on a long finish.
