Macon Vergisson La Roche, Verget 2018
The 2018 Mâcon Vergisson La Roche comes from the free-run juice only and was matured in 20% new oak, with six months of bâtonnage. This has more amplitude on the nose compared to the Montbrison, offering peach slices, pineapple and hints of guava. Gorgeous! The palate is very well balanced with a waxy-textured, pithy opening. This is very complex and taut, yet it shows real persistence on the ginger and lemongrass-tinged finish. Superb. 2020 - 2030

One of the highlights of the range this year is the exceptional 2018 Mâcon-Vergisson La Roche, a lovely wine that unfurls in the glass with aromas of mandarin oil, pear and citrus blossom. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent, with good concentration, lively acids and a fragrant finish. This was Verget's last pick this year, and it was raised in 20% new wood. It's a wine to purchase by the case.

This vineyard is located at the top of the Roche of Vergisson surrounded by plots of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. The exposure is towards the East and the soil is very calcareous. The free run juice was vinified only in barrels with 20% new oak. The fermentations took place until mid- December. Elevage continued for a further 6 months in barrel with some batonnages. A lightly reductive, smoky nose here that reveals citrus peel, ripe pear and a touch of cream with time in the glass. The palate has a line of acidity that cuts through the fleshy stone fruit and adds tension to the ripe, rich mouthfeel. Creamy and bold but still reductive and smoky, this has an unerring, driven finish.
