Bollinger La Cote aux Enfants Rouge 2014

Tasting Notes

Quite deeply colored. A somber if attractively layered nose is composed by ripe aromas of poached plum, violet, dark cherry and plenty of spice nuances. The nicely voluminous, dense and solidly constituted medium-bodied flavors possess a seductive mid-palate texture before culminating in a focused, long and youthfully austere finale. This will clearly need a few years to unwind and resolve at least some of the supporting structure shaping the firm backend. I would add that this is not particularly refined but there is plenty of character and overall, I quite liked this.

From a single Grand Cru plot of four hectares in Aÿ, Bollinger's 2014 La Côte aux Enfants displays a medium-intense purple-ruby color and a clear, delicate, purely fruity bouquet of dark cherries and just-ripe black berries. After a while in the glass, aromas of red berries, dark spices, toast and some floral notes also appear on the bouquet. Medium-bodied, fresh and very elegant on the palate, it is provided with a silky texture and clear, aromatic cherry and dark berry fruit, with a stunningly intense and powerful finish. With 12% alcohol and 100% Pinot Noir, this is a filigreed red Coteaux Champenois that is fabulous in its lightness, purity and elegance. Aged for eight months in small oak barrels, this is a very charming yet still young Pinot Noir with fresh and peppery basil flavors in the aftertaste. The 2014 should have very good aging potential and will most likely gain more open and sweet fruit over the years in the bottle. If you choose to enjoy the wine today, please let it breath for several hours. Tasted May 2018. 2020 - 2028
