The wood treatment stops short of being intrusive though it's not subtle on the overtly spicy mix which combines notes of red and dark cherry, raspberry, earth and a whiff of violet. The seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess a velvety yet muscular mouth feel that carries over to the solidly powerful and impressively persistent finish. Good stuff in a built-to-age package.
The Boudots is reticent but promising, opening in the glass with notes of red-black fruit, spice, coffee and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and ample—not profoundly concentrated, but supple and elegant, with a good core of ripe fruit.
The 2016 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots, which comes under the Domaine Gagey label, was not impacted by frost. It has a clean and pure bouquet with red and black cherries, blueberry and plenty of crushed violets, all Vosne-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, lightly gripping red berry fruit laced with spice and a very composed finish that is far superior to the frost-affected Vaucrains. Excellent.
