Tasting Notes

The 2014 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Combottes comes from 60-year-old vines and is matured in 50% to 60% new oak. It has a well-defined, seductive bouquet with pure dark cherries and cassis fruit that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet core of black fruit, the oak nicely integrated and lending weight, harmonious with touches of marmalade and orange peel towards the dense finish. Give this several years in bottle and then savor over the next dozen.

The 2014 Combottes chez Felettig is outstanding. The superb nose wafts from the glass in a mix of red and black cherries, cocoa, gamebirds, a lovely base of dark soil tones, woodsmoke and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with lovely depth at the core, suave, fine-grained tannins and a very long, beautifully-balanced and sappy finish. I love the combination here of sappy fruit and really pure soil signature. 2024-2060+.

Here there are no annoying reductive notes to the super fresh and elegant aromas of elegant and admirably pure violet, lavender, dark cherry and discreet spice nuances. Once again there is excellent vibrancy to the more mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors that possess a lovely mouth feel while delivering solid length if only average depth on the balanced and detailed finale.
