Tasting Notes

The 2016 La Lagune has a classic tobacco and cedar bouquet with fine delineation and nicely integrated oak. The medium-bodied palate offers gentle grip on the entry and plenty of tarry black fruit. A touch of mint emerges toward the linear but impressively focused finish. I like the vivacity and penetration here. This should drink well over the next two decades. Drink 2021-2045.

The 2016 la Lagune has a medium garnet-purple color and nose of intense cassis, warm cherries, redcurrants and spice box with earth and bay leaves in the undercurrent. The medium-bodied, earth-laced palate is plush and lively, finishing long. Drink date 2019 - 2034.

Now certified organic, and converting to biodynamics from this year. It displays a confident weight to the damson fruits that are hugely elegant and well placed. A little closed when tasted on two occasions, and the high Petit Verdot content of this wine is no doubt contributing to its slight austerity at this stage, but it also brings that beautifully welcome whoosh of black fruit spicing. Very good quality, elegant and long-ageing, just a dash below the exceptional 2015.

Tasted blind. Rich and fruity. Good constitution and much less hard than most of its peers. Rather inky finish but quite persistent.

A popular classed growth of 90 hectares, situated south of Margaux near Cantemerle. The new owners have invested a great deal of money here in recent years and have also bought Paul Jaboulet Ainé in Hermitage. The vineyard is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. In 2016, the blend directly correlates with the plantings. Ripe cherries and damsons on the nose with a touch of liquorice and leather. The palate is concentrated with cassis and tobacco. Structured and intense with fleshy fruit coated by high levels of firm, ripe tannins. Long and savoury on the finish.

This is a great vintage for this terrific Haut-Médoc estate, and the 2016 Château La Lagune is well worth a case purchase. Complex notes of dark fruits, cedar, cigar tobacco, and hints of saddle leather all flow to a medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced 2016 that has sweet tannins and a great finish. It will keep for 25-30 years. Drink 2019-2049.

The black fruits on the nose are sweet the start of the palate has rich fruit mid depth the tannins fine and well integrated. Black cherry richness is underpinned by fresh black fruits balance with sweet rich fruit giving depth on the finish. 2025-35

La Lagune used to punch well below its classification as a third growth, but is making some lovely wines at the moment. This Cabernet-based blend is chalky, fresh and perfumed with plenty of grip and tannin, toasty oak and the potential to age. 2022-30

At least for this writer, the 2016 La Lagune is a return to form after their 2015 did not light my fire last en primeur. Lucid purple/black in color, it has a very intense bouquet with blackberries and sloes, whilst maintaining delineation and focus, almost pastille-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin, perhaps just a little brittle on the entry, though it is commensurate with others 2016s that I tasted in barrel. I appreciate the focus and the "correctness" of this La Lagune, notwithstanding the freshness and tension that defines the persistent finish. This is a long-term wine, so do not be afraid to give this four or five years in the cellar. This is an excellent La Lagune, one of the best in recent years. Drink 2023 - 2045.

Dark crimson with a slightly pale rim. Strong balsam notes on the nose - distinctive! Very full and supple. I would guess there was some strict selection here to have such ripeness. Some freshness on the end. A satisfying whole. Quite long.
Drink 2026-2042
