Ungeheuer Grosses Gewächs, Von Buhl 2015

Tasting Notes

The 2015 Forster Ungeheuer Riesling trocken GG is lemon in color and still cloudy. Very deep, pure and complex on the nose, this wine shows ripe yellow fruits intertwined with flint stones, lemon and some floral aromas. Fresh and elegant on the dense and well-structured palate, this Riesling is very piquant and salty. It has blackcurrant aromas and endless grip, tension and salinity. This is a powerful and very promising Ungeheuer of great elegance and expression. There is so much grip and tension in this wine, so much structure that it might turn out to be one of the best dry Rieslings in the Pfalz, and probably in all of Germany in 2015.

Pale lemon colour in the glass, the Ungeheuer has a superb nose of struck match, honeyed citrus, apple fruit and peaches, with a mineral edge. The palate has a chalky, fat texture with white pepper and flint giving way to juicy peaches and lemon curd. There is a dried herb edge that adds yet another layer of complexity. This is precise, powerful, perfectly balanced and very long on the finish. A hugely impressive wine.
