Tasting Notes

Working vintages in France, Germany and New Zealand fed Stellenbosch University-trained garagiste Donovan Rall's enthusiasm, but one vintage with Eben Sadie was pivotal. The intention for his own range 'never more than 1,000 cases tops' is to be unique. He works closely with Rosa Kruger to find and work with old vineyards sites in the Swartland and Stellenbosch. Grapes come from the slate and clay soils specific to the Riebeeck River. Just seven barrels made. Aged in old oak casks. Syrah/Grenache blend. Notably dark crimson. Very comfortable and sweet but without heavy handed oak. Very charming in a medium bodied, lively idiom. Some mulberries, something strongly savoury spicy. Reminds me a bit of chilli chocolate! Very neat and beautifully balanced. Alluring. Still some tannins lurk. 14%
