Tasting Notes

The 2005 Château Poujeaux has quite a pronounced undergrowth element on the nose, with blackberry, cedar and wet tobacco scents developing in the glass. The palate is rounded on the entry, a voluminous Poujeaux with fine tannin, crisp acidity and a judicious touch of white pepper and tobacco towards the finish. Great length here - probably just entering its drinking plateau now. Drink 2017 - 2032

This well-known estate is now owned by Clos Fourtet’s Philippe Cuvelier, but the estate was owned by Jean Theil when the 2005 was conceived. This 2005 reveals a beautiful black cherry and cassis-scented nose, with a touch of spring flowers, medium to full body, and supple tannin in a sexy, lush, heady style. A sleeper of the vintage, it is already approachable and satisfying, and can be drunk over the next 10-15 years. Drink: 2015 - 2030.

Dark crimson. Very attractively well-melded nose. Fresh start with fully resolved tannins. Just a little harsh on the end. But a seriously alluring nose. GV 13.5%

Deep ruby colour. The nose has a hint of cedary maturity, but is focused on blackcurrant and black cherry fruit with a subtle smokiness. The palate is ripe with black fruit but balanced by acidity and textured by ripe and refined tannins. A superb mouthfeel fills out the body with fleshy black cherry and toast, with a little cigar box in the background. A complete and perfectly balanced wine with a fine, long finish. An excellent example to showcase the 2005 vintage.

Black-red, lots of extraction, ripe cassis and firm tannins, rich, ripe chunky fruit, good solid wine. Drink 2009-20.

This deep ruby/purple-tinged sleeper of the vintage exhibits fresh, lively minerality intermixed with delicate background wood, sweet raspberry fruit, medium to full body, zesty acidity, and ripe tannin. Usually the top wine from Moulis, Poujeaux's 2005 is again a fairly priced, impressive effort. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.

Always an impeccably made as well as under-valued effort, Poujeaux’s deep ruby/purple-tinged 2005 exhibits earthy notes of mulberries, black cherries, minerals, and spicy wood, soft but noticeable tannins, medium to full body, and terrific fruit integrity and purity. This impressively layered Moulis should be at its finest between 2010-2025.

Robert Parker scored this wine but space limitations did not allow him to publish tasting notes. He did, however, write about this wine and all the other cru bourgeois that he scored that: "2005 is the finest vintage for these wines since 1982. The range of scores for these wines should give readers an idea of just how consistent this vintage is at this level. Given the style of the vintage, most of these wines should be accessible young yet evolve for a decade or more because of their concentration and tannic structure."

Wonderful ripe fruit and spices in this wine. Full-bodied, with very fine tannins. Long finish.

Not especially blue. A bit stringy and astringent. Inky texture with the fruit overwhelmed by very slightly green tannins. Very dry, firm but neat tannins - very appetising rather than deadening. Complete - well balanced. Not as intense as some 2005s but good balance - and a true expression of the vintage. Not for the long term but well done for relatively early drinking. Zappy and lively with enough sweet fruit and dry tannin to counterbalance each other. Drink 2012-18
