Tertre Rôteboeuf 2014

Tasting Notes

The 2014 Le Tertre Roteboeuf, now in bottle, has a very refined and pure bouquet, with red cherries, wild strawberry and a touch of orange blossom—all very Burgundy-like in style. The palate is very well balanced, with crisp tannin, hints of fig and date infusions that complement the red berry fruit, and a touch of white pepper toward the long finish. This is turning out to be a delicious (as banal as that reads) Le Tertre-Roteboeuf with the tannic structure to suggest that it will give pleasure over the next 20-30 years.

Tasted blind. Very nuanced colour with some evolution. Very sweet and oaky on the nose. Very different and rich. Rose petals and soft tannins. Neat. Long. Opulent. Marmite wine.

Francois Mitjavile's brilliant and unique wine has a different character from that of all its Saint Emilion rivals. There is almost a Pinot Noir sweetness and exceptional purity. Only available in very limited quantities. Our visit to the unassuming cellars with their mud floors and dirty walls is always fascinating and a highlight of our visits to Bordeaux. Production is around 2000 cases annually with elevage in 100% new "Radoix blend" fine grain barrels. The south-facing vineyard produces wines that are ripe but never jammy. They frequently remind us of Le PIn and sometimes even of Musigny. A top performer at the annual Southwold blind tastings. 29hl/ha in 2014. This is the latest vintage Francois Mitjavile has ever seen, with an Autumnal maturation that meant harvest didn't start until 15th October. Medium-deep purple colour. Incredibly fragrant, perfumed Burgundian-style nose with bright red cherries, blueberries, incense, espresso coffee, wood-smoke, and violets. The palate is ripe, soft, and smooth with refined and silky tannins. The plum and mulberry fruit core is lifted by a herbal and floral character. Incredibly complex, with truffles and cream on the finish that is incredibly long. Excellent intensity but so light on its feet. Another excellent Tertre Roteboeuf.

The 2014 Tertre Roteboeuf is an exuberant, generous, incredibly sexy wine in a vintage they yielded more classic, straightforward efforts. Boasting a deep ruby/plum color as well as a rockin’ bouquet of espresso, spice-box, blackberries, new leather and Asian spice, this ripe, medium to full-bodied, layered 2014 has terrific purity of fruit as well as an undeniable hedonistic, opulent personality. It’s one of the stronger wines in the vintage and can be drunk now or cellared for 15+ years. 2018 - 2033

Floral and fragrant there is a lot happening on the nose violets and herbs a touch of spice. The palate has a mix of freshness and sweetness seamless with ripe tannins adding to the mid suppleness. Under the fleshy richness red fruited freshness gives a lighter feel the finish long with lingering flavours an elegant charm. 2021-38

The wines from this château are always the most poised and elegant of Saint Emilion, showing a refinement that nods towards Burgundy. That's the case here: smoky, textured and savoury with fine-boned tannins, succulent red and black fruits and a warming, slightly too alcoholic finish.

The Château Tertre-Rôteboeuf 2014 already has an extremely pure bouquet that almost whisks you away to the Côte d’Or: vivacious raspberry coulis and fresh strawberry scents suffused with fine mineralité. It’s unmistakable “Mitjavile”, a bouquet you want to hug as much as inhale. The palate is medium-bodied with dusky dark berries, black plum and a dab of dried fig on the entry, which dovetails into a precise and linear middle. There is a satisfying grainy texture with a gourmand-like, savory-tinged salted licorice finish that completes this what might prosaically be described as a "delicious" Saint Emilion.
