Tasting Notes

Aromas of flowers, stones and hints of tobacco. Medium-bodied, very fine and pretty. The 18% cabernet sauvignon and 13% cabernet franc make the difference. Coolest Quinault ever. Drink or hold.

Tasted blind. Looks a little thin at the rim. Smells herbal. Good front palate attack and not overdone. Some may reproach this for being too simple but the balance is good. Very clean and healthy.

Fresh, if a bit on the lighter side. Light incense and black tea details lead into gentle-edged raspberry and damson plum coulis flavors. The silky finish picks up light mint and savory hints. Drink now through 2024. 3,500 cases made.

The 2014 Quinault l'Enclos, which was the first vintage to utilize larger 500-liter barrels and also the first to utilize the newly planted Cabernet Sauvignon to lend structure. Now in bottle, this Saint Emilion has an attractive bouquet with brambly red berry fruit, predominantly raspberry preserve and a touch of loganberries. The oak here is neatly folded into the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannin on the entry. Although the Cabernet Sauvignon does lend more backbone, I was quite surprised how approachable this Quinault l'Enclos is, partly because of the growing season. It is certainly harmonious, without enormous depth or grip, the dash of black pepper on the finish a pleasing way to finish off. Drink Date 2018-2029

The Château Quinault l’Enclos 2014 is a blend of 69% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Cabernet Franc. Incidentally, there is now some Cabernet Sauvignon on the gravel soils that was planted in 2009. There is a second change here apropos the size of the barrels – 500-liters instead of 225-liters as they do not desire oaky notes on the nose. The nose is sensual, rounded and generous with a light sea spray influence that lends complexity. The palate is medium-bodied, structured and masculine with good density, though I was seeking a little more flesh and finesse towards the spicy, broody finish. That may come with barrel age. We will see. I will remain parsimonious with my score for now. Drink: 2018 - 2030

This shows lots of fruit and structure with juicy fruit, velvety tannins and a long and flavorful finish. This has 18% cabernet sauvignon and it makes a difference, 13% cabernet franc and the rest merlot. They also aged a large percentage in 500 lters. This shows depth.
