The 2012 Les Hauts De Smith merits interest. Very supple, sexy, black cherry and blackcurrant and blueberry fruit jump from the glass of this soft, round, juicy wine. It shows white tannin and no real oak. The wine is a rich, fruity, very seductive style of wine to drink over the next 10-12 years. Drink 2015-2027.
Tasted from a barrel sample at en primeur. A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon from the young vines of the estate, this has a well defined, quite pure bouquet with blackberry, cedar, a touch of iodine and violet. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, edgy tannins that lend it fine tension, especially towards the structured finish. There are hints of Dorset plum and blackberry with an undertow of brine. Interesting! Tasted April 2013.
An expressive, ripe nose of plums, damson and blueberry with a little sweet spice make for an enticing nose to this wine. The palate is smooth and supple, with refined tannins giving no hard edges. There is a lovely balance between juicy blueberry and cherry fruit, a hint of graphite, and lifted sweet vanilla. Supple, round and moreish.
