Charmes Chambertin VV, Domaine Bachelet 2001

Tasting Notes

**Note: from a .44 ha parcel of 80+ year old vines situated directly across from Chambertin**
Rich, exuberant and concentrated aromas of earth and very fresh red pinot fruit explode from the glass and lead to full, supple, round, very sappy, medium weight, remarkably complex flavors and an intense, persistent, focused, nicely detailed finish. This is the epitome of power without weight and the purity here is stunning.

The 2001 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru had been opened by Denis Bachelet the morning of my visit for another professional journalist. Interestingly, he told me that it was tasting much better after 5-6 hours opening than earlier. It has a lovely, fully mature bouquet with scents of pain d'epices and balsamic infusing the red berry fruit, the copper piping note that I remarked upon last year, lurking in the background. The palate is beautifully balanced with gorgeous, mature red berry fruit, dark chocolate, cola and orange zest. It merges with brown spices towards the finish that has wonderful transparency and great length, even if it does not possess that peacock's tail that marks out other vintages. Tasted December 2016. 2017 - 2029
