Tasting Notes

This is another Medoc 1998 that is revealing more mid-palate, flesh, concentration, and sweeter tannin after bottling than it did during its elevage. A blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 38% Merlot, this black/purple-colored claret exhibits sweet aromas of licorice, incense, Asian spices, cedar, plums, and black currants. Full-bodied and sweet on the entry, with good acidity, definition, and ripe tannin, it will be drinkable young, yet last for 12-15 years. Last tasted, 3/02.

This is another Medoc 1998 that is revealing more mid-palate, flesh, concentration, and sweeter tannin than it did during its previous year and a half in barrel.

A perplexing effort (particularly since it was fat, opulent, and round when tasted last year), after nine months in barrel the tannin is elevated, and the wine has lost much of its charm. While concentrated, it possesses the vintage's hard tannin, resulting in a gritty, dense but structured Pauillac lacking roundness, finesse, and charm. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2014.

I was surprised by how soft and fat this 1998 was. While it possesses structure, the overall impression is one of succulence and ripe fruit. The blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and 22% Cabernet Franc has resulted in a cedary, coffee, and black currant-scented and flavored wine with medium body, excellent concentration, and length. Anticipated maturity:
