Tasting Notes

Apposite the 1986 Leoville-Poyferre there is great difference in colour, the 1985 is less opaque with much more maturity on the its brick rim. The nose is quintessential for the vintage, ripe and generous, perhaps almost extrovert with notes of blackberries, sandalwood, hung game and chestnut. The palate is medium-bodied, lovely fleshy texture but with firm, very fine tannins behind it. Roasted meats, spice, dates and game all vie for attention, whilst the finish is very harmonious and focused with a long aftertaste. Just a lovely claret to consume now, as I doubt it will get much better. Drink now-2015 Tasted March 2008

A very flaccid, diffuse style of Leoville-Poyferre with an evolved medium ruby color already exhibiting amber, the nose offers up notes of herbs intermixed with currants, licorice, and vanilla. The mouth is round and medium-bodied with good concentration. The finish shows some sweet tannin. This wine is fully mature. Anticipated maturity: Now-2006. Last tasted, 3/02.

Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book (4), December 2003

An underrated wine, the 1985 Léoville Poyferré wafts from the glass with lovely aromas of sweet berry fruit, cedarwood, loamy soil, cocoa nib and subtle hints of licorice. Medium-bodied, velvety and seamless, it's lively and flavorful, with melting tannins, bright acids and a long, penetrating finish. Less fleshy than the generous 1982 and without the richness or musculature of 1989 or 1990, this is nevertheless a terrific effort in a more elegant stylistic register.Drink Date 2000 - 2030
