Tasting Notes

There is lovely ripeness and a clear sense of refinement to the ripe yet cool red berry liqueur and stone aromas. The delicious and mineral-inflected medium weight flavors display ample verve and good mid-palate density that mostly buffers the firm but well-integrated tannic spine, all wrapped in a gorgeously persistent and ever-so-mildly austere finish. This should be a classic Clos St. Jacques with 12 to 15 years of bottle age though have the advantage of being accessible after only 6 to 8 years, which is unusual for this wine.

Saturated medium red. Black cherry, violet and some caramel oak high tones on the nose. Sweet, dense and floral, with a rather strong oakiness in spite of the fact that this is aging in just 30% new barrels. Best today on the very broad, sweet back end, which features suave tannins and excellent length. From a second barrel: More espresso but less caramel on the nose. Juicy and imploded in the mouth, with lovely perfume to the tangy cherry and raspberry flavors. A dense, saline wine with terrific energy and length. I'd like to taste this side by side with the 2008 in a few years. My score is for the second sample.

Here the ripe nose is not only the most complex among these Gevrey 1ers
but also the most elegant as there is excellent breadth to the red berry liqueur and stone aromas. The delicious and mineralinflected
medium weight flavors display ample verve and good mid-palate density that mostly buffers the firm but well-integrated
tannic spine, all wrapped in a gorgeously persistent finish. This should be a classic CSJ with 12 to 15 years of bottle age
though have the advantage of being accessible after 6 to 8. (92-95)/2021+
