Gevrey Premier Cru, Domaine Dugat-Py 2005

Tasting Notes

A notably spicy and expressive nose features black pinot fruit, violets, underbrush and a hint of animale precedes delicious and highly complex flavors that are noticeably more refined and really quite pure and delineated on the impeccably well balanced finish that goes on and on. There is real sense of energy here and I like the texture. A beautiful effort.

A blend of three lieux-dits: Santenay, Corbeaux and Perrieres from sixty year old vines, six barrels made. A complex nose of blackberry, raisin, minerals and cassis. Superb delineation and certainly a level up from the Coeur du Roy. The palate has a lovely roundness to it, harmonious, a touch of white pepper sprinkled upon pure, cherry-tinged red fruits. Well-integrated new oak with a silky finish again like a Vosne-Romanee. Outstanding. Drinking 2011-2018. Tasting January 2007.

Assembled from parcels in Corbeaux, Perrieres and Fontenay all acquired in recent years, Dugat's 150-cases worth of 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru offers ripe black fruit, roasted meat, cedar, and resin aromas, displays formidable density yet refined tannins on a palate saturated by cassis, black cherry, purple plum, cherry pit and meat stock, and finishes tenaciously with black fruit, stony mineral and roasted carnal depth. I would look for at least 12-15 years of improvement.
