Tasting Notes

Over the last twenty years, Montrose-s second wine, La Dame de Montrose has been an excellent buy. The 2009 La Dame de Montrose (almost all Merlot with a tiny bit of Cabernet Sauvignon) is a seductive, succulent effort revealing silky tannins, abundant blueberry and blackberry fruit notes intermixed with notions of damp earth, truffles and camphor, and an appealing, luscious personality. Enjoy it over the next 10-15 years.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, March 2012

The 2009 La Dame de Montrose is broody and backward on the nose, just a touch of reduction that soon blows off, yet the predominantly black fruit remains tight, fleeting hints of bayleaf and black tea surfacing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite compact in style but rather linear and missing some complexity/personality towards the finish. Maybe this has something up its sleeve? We will no doubt find out. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. 2021 - 2030

Aromas of berries, currant and citrus fruit follow through to a full body, with firm and chewy tannins and a medium finish. A little hollow in the midpalate. Second wine of Montrose.

James Suckling, WineSpectator.com, March 2010

28% of production. 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 82% Merlot. Light nose, slightly soapy, with obviously a lot of substance underneath. Very rich and full and succulent but not awfully refreshing. Just a tad heavy. Then rather raw tannins on the finish. A bit ungainly. Very much a second wine rather than a wine sculpted in its own right. Date tasted 1st April 2010. Drink 2014-2020.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, April 2010

The second wine of Chateau Montrose. With new owners and a new wine-making team at Montrose, this label has benefitted greatly from a more serious selection process at this famous Chateau. The 2009 is 82% Merlot and consequently completely different from the grand vin. Thick legs, very perfumed with vanilla and brioche on the nose. Lots of plump ripe fruit on the palate. Plush, fleshy, supple and juicy

Farr Vintners, January 2010

There is the brightness of red fruit about the nose with behind them the fleshy ripeness of plum and blackcurrant. The sweetness is not jammy as it is well refreshed by red cherry. Drink 2018-2040.

The second wine, the 2009 La Dame de Montrose, is an amazing blend of 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon. Voluptuously textured, super juicy, and sexy with intense blue and black fruits, decent acids, and silky tannin, this 2009 is already irresistible, and should keep for 10-15+ years. (Tasted once.) Drink 2010-2025.

Robert Parker added an asterisk to this wine score to signify that it is a wine he considers has the finest potential of all the offerings he has ever tasted from this estate in nearly 32 years of barrel tasting samples in Bordeaux.
