Forty-seven percent of the crop made it into the savory, complex, fully mature 2003 Rauzan Segla. Notes of coffee bean, white chocolate, forest floor, red and black currants and tobacco leaf are present in this dark plum/garnet-colored 2003. The final blend was 53.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and the rest tiny dollops of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. There is a slight herbal tinge to the wine, but it is fresh, complex aromatically, and exhibits the vintage's opulence. Enjoy it over the next 5-8 years. Drink 2014-2022
Tasted at the Batailley vertical tasting at the château, the 2003 Batailley continues to be one of the better Left Banks of the vintage. On the nose, ripe black cherries mixed with cassis are all nicely defined and holding on to their freshness. It manifests spicy aromas, almost Moroccan-inspired, as it gradually opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with dense black fruit, a little tarry in texture with firm tannin considering that it is now 12 years old. You could broach this Pauillac now, but it should give another 10-12 years of pleasure without too much difficulty. Tasted April 2016.

Long on the palate. Rich. Serious effort here.
Crimson. Sweet and lively. Bit of zap on the nose. Nice dryness as well as lovely sandy refreshing tannins. Good attack. Fine wine in the classical mould.
A brilliant success, the fully mature 2003 Batailley exhibits a dense plum/garnet color in addition to a sweet perfume of creme de cassis, licorice, forest floor and spice. Round, generous and medium to full-bodied with good acidity and well-integrated, melted tannins, this 2003 can be enjoyed now and over the next 10+ years. Drink 2014-2024
Always a solid, rigidly constructed Pauillac, the 2003 Batailley is slightly friendlier than usual, but it possesses plenty of tannin, medium body, and excellent black currant as well as dusty, loamy soil notes. With good power and firmness, it needs to be cellared for 4-5 years before consumption. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2017.
