Tasting Notes

Terrific aromas of ripe fruit, spices, licorice and blackberries. Full-bodied, with lots of ripe fruit and a lovely balance of round tannins and hints of oak. Very concentrated. Best after 2006. 95 points.

Angelos Gaja's single-vineyard wines from the Langhe (formerly labelled as Barbarescos) are among the most sought-after wines of Piedmont. Though his Sori San Lorenzo is considered the best by many wine lovers, Gaja's personal favourite is Costa Russi. In the outstanding 1998 vintage, I gave both classic scores. - JS

The dark ruby/purple-colored, supple-texture 1998 Costa Russi possesses sweet, jammy raspberry and cherry fruit, medium to full body, gorgeous glycerin, low acidity, and a lightly tannic finish. Although large-sized, it has good finesse as well as beautifully pure fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2020.
