Smith Woodhouse, Smith Woodhouse - Symington Family Estates 2007

Brambly black fruit on the nose with touches of cigar box, fireside hearth, just a faint touch of wild mint. Good definition although it does not have the same level of vigour as other 2007 ports. The palate is medium-bodied with great purity on the entry. A port defined by its elegance - almost understated but it builds beautifully. Fine tannins on the finish, touches of cloves and ginger lingering on the aftertaste. Perhaps earlier drinking but very refined.

Grapey and aromatic, with hints of citrus and blueberry on the nose. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with medium tannins and a clean, fresh finish. A little forward. I expected slightly more from this in this vintage. Best after 2015. 3,000 cases made. -JS

Bright medium ruby. Blackberry, black cherry, licorice, dark chocolate and spices on the nose. Dense, broad and sweet, with lovely mineral lift to the youthful flavors of cassis, dark chocolate and sweet spices. Finishes broad, lively and fresh, with plenty of tannic spine to support a slow evolution in bottle.

Firm, smoky and liquorice with a hint of tar. Serious stuff. Nice fresh fruit and really rather luscious. Exciting tingle on the palate. There's a great beginning, middle and end to this wine. Zesty but rewarding. Bravo! Maybe not for the very long term but great balance for the medium term.
