Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (129), June 2000

The wine of the vintage! Hermitage enjoyed surprising success in this universally maligned year. This wine has been spectacular for well over 10 years, yet it continues to evolve at a snail's pace. Still dark garnet-colored with some amber at the edge, it offers huge aromas of smoky Syrah fruit, herbs, and Asian spices. In the mouth, there is tremendous concentration, plenty of power, and a full-bodied texture. Interestingly, the acid is remarkably high, as are the ripeness and extract. This fully mature wine may last for another 10-15 years. Anticipated maturity: now-2008. Last tasted 11/96.
