Tasting Notes

A potential sleeper of the vintage, this cru bourgeois is unusually successful, as were most wines from this appellation where the high percentage of clay in the soil resisted the torridly hot, dry weather conditions. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by straightforward notes of black fruits and licorice. With low acidity, excellent texture, and a plush finish, it will drink well for 7-8 years.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (152), April 2004

Aromas of blackberry and cherry follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a long finish. Best after 2005.

James Suckling, Wine Spectator, March 2006

Mid crimson, quite healthy. Sweet, macerated fruits. Good spine of acidity and tannin, well integrated. This could be great buy for medium term drinking. Though it is not especially intense. Drink 2007-2011. Date tasted 7th April 05.

Jancis Robinson MW, JancisRobinson.com, August 2005

The heat and drought-affected 2003 vintage was a good year for St Estèphe and even this humble cru bourgeois, bang next door to the top dogs - second growth Cos d'Estournel and fourth growth Lafon- Rochet - punches well above its weight. Enjoy this summer claret's fine, mature, oaky, elegant fruit with cold rosy-pink roast beef for a warm weather treat.
