Charmes Chambertin TVV, Domaine Joseph Roty 2005

Tasting Notes

A subtle but not invisible application of wood frames the ripe and still almost entirely primary aromas of earthy and spicy red and dark currant scents that are trimmed in a touch of menthol. There is outstanding richness to the full-bodied and muscular big-bodied flavors that coat the palate the seemingly endless reserves of dry extract that also serves to buffer the hugely long if slightly warm finish. This is clearly still in its infancy and it would be largely pointless to open a bottle now as the '05 TVV is nowhere close to its apogee but the "can't miss" development potential is manifest.

Nine barrels from a plot of vines replanted just after phylloxera epidemic in 1885. A luscious, ripe, cherry, blueberry and vanilla pod nose. Great delineation and lift. The palate is very tight, more so than either Griottes or Mazis. Great delineation, a touch of spice. More masculine than Charmes, this is a real vin de garde and will demand many years of cellaring. A legend in the making. Drinking 2018-2040. Tasted January 2007.

From vines said to have been planted in the 1880s, the Roty 2005 Charmes Chambertin Tres Vieilles Vignes announces its distinction a foot away from the glass, with uncanny intensity and clarity of black fruit essences, along with ineffable mineral and animal suggestions. Tactile cinnamon spiciness, bitter-sweet herbs, and black cherry and black raspberry concentrate (fresh, yet with liqueur-like intensity, sweetness and viscosity) saturate the palate, and a dark and rising tide of mineral and carnal flavors meets the fruit and spice in a thunderous finish. There is mystery aplenty here, with the sex appeal well beneath the surface.

A highly complex nose featuring a bright mix of red, black and violet aromas trimmed in moderate toast highlights very rich and full-bodied flavors underpinned by superb dry extract levels on the explosive and slightly woody but explosive finish. While a bit oaky at present, there is so much extract here that it should eventually come together given the substantially long life ahead

Opaque deep ruby. Incredible nose of blackberry, black licorice, black pepper, spices and smoke; an essence of pinot noir's dark side. Offers mindboggling density and solidity, but with its fine grain the overall impression is of sweetness and class. Wonderfully layered, profound wine whose lush tannins are inundated by a wave of blackberry and spices. It's hard even to find Chambertin as good as this. Philippe notes that these vines, originally planted in 1885, are situated in the lieu-dit Aux Charmes, on rock. The crop level in 2005 was just under 35 hectoliters per hectare.
