Tasting Notes

The 2007 Gloria felt a little simple compared to some of its peers, with straightforward scents of blackberry and cedar, just missing some of the secondary nuances displayed by others. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, chewy in the mouth with grippy cedar-infused, earthy black fruit on the finish. There is commendable focus here, although it needs to muster more charm. Tasted February 2017.

Very round and fully developed. Opulent and fun. Round and pleasing, Really rather glorious. Dry finish but lots of fun. (Must be fun because I wrote it twice.) GV [good value] Drink 2014-2022

Cedary sappy cassis and cassis leaf on the nose. Gentle, smooth and fresh. Easy and harmonious with a spicy kick at the end. Firm but rounded tannins. Drink 2012-20

Very deep colour, full, spicy, floral, with a clean, classy expression, good depth of fruit on the palate, a very good Saint-Julien for the medium term. Drink 2012-18.

Classy and classic. A wine punching well above it's weight. Blackcurrant fruit that is open and fresh… one word… 'tasty'.

Phillip Schofield, Wine Relief Tasting, January 2013

Dark red at the centre with some light fading at the rim that suggests maturity. On the nose there is a classic Medoc bouquet of cigar box, cedar and spice. The big surprise here is the initial attack on the palate. It is so incredibly lush, plump and sweet until some balancing, but soft, tannins kick in at the finish. This wine is full of rich, ripe black fruits with low acidity and ripe, polished tannins. There is a lovely cloak of vanilla oak that perfectly matches the opulence of the fruit. Blueberry jam on toasted brioche springs to mind! There is good density here and a creamy texture and the wine is mouth-filling without being too powerful or aggressive. This is nevertheless a real, and sophisticated, Saint Julien with notes of lead pencil and wood shavings despite its very open-knit and easy-going personality. It is totally ready to drink but will give great pleasure over the next 5-10 years (if you can wait that long). A Bordeaux that will satisfy both hedonists and purists. A glorious Gloria that is impossible to resist.

Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. The Gloria 2007 has an attractive bouquet with dusty blackberry and graphite aromas, a touch of Hoi Sin in the background with well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with pencil shavings on the entry, building nicely to a rather austere middle that fans out nicely towards the more fruit-driven finish, though it is tobacco and sous-bois that lingers on the after-taste. This is an "interesting" Claret whose development I will watch closely. Tasted January 2011.
