Tasting Notes

A magnificent sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 Duhart Milon is the shrewd consumer's wine to purchase by the case as prices do not yet reflect its qualitative resurgence. Composed of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot that came in at 13.09% alcohol, it is a surprisingly intense effort displaying a marvelous texture, plenty of black currant, licorice, unsmoked cigar tobacco and earthy characteristics, a full-bodied mouthfeel and stunning purity as well as density. Enjoy this top-notch 2008 over the next 20-25 years.

The 2008 Duhart-Milon has always been an impressive wine. Here it has a very intense, backward, graphite and cedar-scented bouquet that just seems to grow in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, crisp acidity, brisk blackberry and raspberry fruit laced with graphite and tobacco notes towards the austere finish. I keep ratcheting up my score as it seems to find a new facet with each swirl of the glass. Superb. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 10-Year On tasting. 2018 - 2032

Purple. Extremely deep colour - deeper than Lafite! Fine, scented, aromatic and flattering on the nose. Lovely texture. Rather forward and fine tannined. Powdery texture. Lots of Cabernet (73%) but very ripe Cabernet. Very fine and neat - truly baby Lafite, except that of course it tastes much less embryonic in terms of development than its stablemate Lafite. A very successful seductive Duhart-Milon. Great balance.

The nose is rich packed out with black fruits all feeling ripe. Rich cassis and black cherry are
underpinned by slightly freshness bilberry and bramble a complex mix of flavours. The back
palate is rich and deep but the finish has elegance coming from the fresher fruit. 2015-2028

As I have previously written, Duhart Milon has become one of the stars of Pauillac thanks to the meticulous attention to detail as well as the investments made by the Rothschild family. A blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot, with the Cabernet picked during the week of October 8-15, and the Merlot a week earlier, the 2008 offers up sweet aromas of cassis, licorice, crushed rocks, and forest floor in an expressive, graceful aromatic display. Freshness, superb concentration, high but ripe, sweet tannins, and good acids characterize this dense, concentrated wine. It possesses a stunning upside potential of 25-30 years. Yet, like so many of these 2008s, the ripeness of the tannins along with the density and sweetness of the fruit suggest it will be approachable at an early age.

Tasted ex-chateau and single blind in Southwold. The Duhart Milon 2008 is really turning into a great Pauillac. It has a lovely, intense bouquet with blackberry, undergrowth and a touch of game with well integrated oak. Graphite aromas emerge with time. The palate is well balanced, quite austere with upfront graphite flavours, very classic with good substance on the foursquare, almost severe on the finish that is fresh and lively. One of the few easily identified under blind conditions. Tasted January 2012. Drink 2016-2035.

The richness of ripe fruit gives flesh to the nose and a supple start to the palate. The mix of black fruits ensures complexity and although the tannins feel firm they do not over dominate. Hints of raspberry give an elegant feel to the finish.
