This is a stunning Clos de Vougeot, a distinct level up from the great 2000. The nose blossoms in the glass with raspberry leaf, wild strawberry and cranberry, crushed stone and breathtaking definition. There is still that sense of warmth that envelopes the aromatic profile. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, supple tannin, svelte and languid with tart red cherries and redcurrant, effortlessly poised towards the long, cerebral finish. Stunning. Drink 2012-2020+ Tasted November 2009.
I hadn't tasted this since 2008 and it has largely arrived at its peak with some bricking evident at the rim along with mostly secondary aromas that are trimmed in earth, dried flower and humus nuances. The sleek, delicious and vibrant middle weight plus flavors possess excellent delineation while delivering excellent length on the lingering if ever-so-slightly clipped finale. Still, I very much like the mid-palate mouth feel and the overall sense of depth. Note that while this is now fully mature it should be capable of holding at this level for another decade, perhaps even longer.
Much less austere than usual with explosive and slowly maturing aromas of subtle toast, dried herbs and obvious earth notes that combine with big, robust and intense full-bodied flavors that deliver real concentration that is beginning to unfold and while this remains a distinctly textured effort, it is begining to open and develop some really lovely finishing complexity. A great effort that is still quite young but is beginning to lose some of its youthful austerity, particularly on the wonderfully long finish
