Tasting Notes

Grand Mayne’s 2005 (a blend of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a sexy, fleshy St.-Emilion with a dense ruby/purple color and loads of blueberry, cassis and black raspberry fruit. It is medium to full-bodied, luscious, and already drinkable, although capable of lasting another 10-15 years.

Score: 92Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (219), June 2015

Classic aromas of blueberries, cedar, vanillin, black currants, and spring flowers jump from the glass of this dense purple-colored St.-Emilion. Broad, rich, jammy fruit flavors compete with the full-bodied, highly-extracted style that exhibits moderate tannin as well as excellent overall harmony and purity. This cuvee tends to be made in a dense, chewy style, and the 2005 may ultimately rival Grand-Mayne’s brilliant 1998. Anticipated maturity: now-2022. A sleeper of the vintage!

Score: 93Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (176), April 2008

Clearly the finest wine Grand-Mayne has produced since their glorious 1998, the big, deep blue/purple-colored 2005 reveals a floral-scented bouquet offering notions of spice box, toasty oak, and blueberry as well as blackberry jam. This dense, powerful, in-your-face, loaded St.-Emilion is rich, full-bodied, and moderately tannic. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025+.

Score: 90/92Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (170), April 2007

The best Grand-Mayne since the blockbuster 1998, the inky/ruby/purple-colored 2005 reveals hints of blueberries, pain grille, crushed rocks, and white flowers. Boasting superb intensity, purity, body, and unctuosity along with an endearing freshness and vibrancy that provide definition and uplift, it will be drinkable upon release, and evolve for 15-20 years.

Score: 90James Suckling, WineSpectator.com, February 2008

Gorgeous nose of crushed berry and dried flowers. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and silky tannins. Very pretty.

Score: 89/91James Suckling, WineSpectator.com, March 2006

Mid ruby. Rich, fully ripe fragrance. Juicy fruit. Sappy with quite pronounced fine tannins on the finish. Very lively wine without great mass but with vivacity. Real energy and good persistence. No ingredient X but very competent in vaguely modern idiom.
