Aiguilhe 2001

Tasting Notes

A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2001 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color to the rim as well as a sumptuous bouquet of spice box, licorice, black currants, and loamy, earthy characteristics. Made in a suave, savory style, with medium body, sweet tannin, ripe fruit, and loads of balance as well as elegance, this beauty will drink well for 10+ years. It is a sleeper of the vintage. This large estate is owned by Stephan von Neipperg, who hired guru winemaking consultant Stephane Derenoncourt to make the wine.

The 2001 d'Aiguilhe is a classic, with sweet cassis intermixed with licorice, spice box, tobacco leaf, and toasty oak. The wine is rich, concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and impressive. It is certainly a candidate for an outstanding score when bottled in a month or two and released later this year. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2015. This large estate, with a fabulous castle on the property, consists of 106 acres planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. With wine consultant Stephane Derenoncourt in the background, this is a property to take seriously.

A dense purple color is accompanied by sweet aromas of tapenade, blackberries, and licorice. This textured, full-bodied, intense 2001 is layered with rich fruit, amazing unctuosity and thickness, and a long, pure, ripe finish. This brilliant offering made by the ever-capable Stephane von Neipperg is a remarkable effort emerging from one of Bordeaux's most improved appellations, the Cotes de Castillon. Drink it during its first 12-14 years of life
