Aiguilhe 2000

Tasting Notes

The outstanding 2000 exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a glorious nose of creosote, licorice, blackberry and cassis liqueur, medium to full body, tremendous texture, and impressive ripe fruit. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered after spending time in 80% new French oak, on its lees, with frequent batonnage as well as micro-oxygenation. This is serious stuff as well as a sleeper of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: now-2015.

This large estate, with a fabulous castle on the property, consists of 106 acres planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. With wine consultant Stephane Derenoncourt in the background, this is a property to take seriously.

This is the newest property acquired by Comte de Neipperg. This is the first vintage in which he controlled the viticulture as well as the vinification, and guess what ... it's exceptional! Possibly a new benchmark for Cotes de Castillon (let's hope the price does not get out of control), its saturated black/purple color is followed by aromas of licorice, incense, blackberries, chocolate, and coffee. Full-bodied, with tremendous layers of fruit and concentration, this offering possesses the mass, richness, and complexity of a serious classified growth. I would opt for drinking it during its first 8-10 years of life. Wow! A sleeper of the vintage.
