**Note: from a mix of 10+ and 30+ year old vines**
Here the impressively pure nose speaks of extract of red currant together with notes of damp earth, spice and liquid stone. On the palate this is lacier and more refined than is typical with intensely mineral-driven flavors yet to be sure there is still some of the sleek muscularity one expects to find in a textbook Champans. I very much like the palpable sense of underlying tension though it's worth pointing out that this presently very tight and will need ample cellar time to completely unwind.
The 2010 Volnay Champans presents a deeper, richer and more powerful expression of fruit than the Mitans. It was also made with 100% destemmed fruit. Here the aromas and flavors are on the darker side of red, but it is more the wine's muscle and textural plushness that distinguishes it. Sweet spices, red berries and licorice wrap around the plush finish. This is another great effort. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035.
