An Incredible New Discovery - Champagne Bonnaire

Yesterday we made a new discovery – the exceptional Champagne Bonnaire. This single estate (aka 'grower') Champagne producer, located in Cramant in the Côte des Blancs, produces exceptionally fine Blanc de Blancs Champagnes for very little money and we are hugely excited about this find.

The Bonnaire house was established in 1932 and has grown to be one of the largest single estate Champagne growers in the region. This means that they have the financial resources to make a no-expenses-spared range of Champagnes of the very highest quality – something that was immediately evident in the tasting yesterday.

Antonio Galloni describes Bonnaire as “Champagne with terrific balance and definition” and we couldn’t agree more. Champagne connoisseur Richard Juhlin has stated “my private cellar is full of bottles of Bonnaire” – high praise indeed from someone who knows Champagne better than most. Even the notoriously hard-to-please Allen Meadows is a fan.

The first Champagne we tasted was the N.V. Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru at £120 per 6 bottles in bond, which was very pure and elegant with lovely chalky minerality and just a touch of sweetness from the 7gr/l dosage. Because it is aged in the bottle for 36 months it has a complexity and sophistication uncommon in grower Champagnes at this price. We may just have just found your new summer Champagne and it is also available in magnums!

Next up was the 2008 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru at £150 per 6 bottles in bond. The 2008 vintage is arguably the region’s greatest since 1996 and we are slowly starting to see these Champagnes released on to the market. This certainly lived up to the hype of the vintage. It had a much more complex nose with creamy, brioche notes while, on the palate, it was structured and powerful and will benefit from a few years in the cellar.

The third Champagne in the line-up was the N.V. Rosé at £125 per 6 bottles in bond. Unlike the other two wines, this contained 40% Pinot Noir of which 12% was still red wine (Côteaux Champenois) to give the wine its colour. Although it had attractive fruity notes of raspberries and peaches on the nose, it was far from being the frivolous pink fizz that many rosés can be. This had a crisp, dry finish that would perfectly partner many dishes and left us wanting another sip.

All things told, we highly recommend all three Champagnes for both their sheer quality and utter drinking pleasure, not to mention their unrivalled value for money. These should not be missed!

“A bright, pale colour in the glass, the nose here is chalky and steely, bringing lemon pith, white flowers and a touch of struck flint on the nose. The palate is pure and mineral, pairing savoury and lightly bready notes with a slight fleshy roundness that brings hints of lemon curd and white stone fruit. This builds through the mid palate, with a creamy but delicate mousse adding textural breadth whilst retaining such poise and fleet-footed freshness. Zippy and lifted on a long finish.”

“A bright lemon colour. More savoury and earthy than the non-vintage, this offers a touch more brioche and smoke whilst retaining crisp and taut citrus fruit. Acidity lines the palate and brings great structure and ageing potential and fruit and toast build through to the finish. Creamy in mousse yet cutting in acidity, this is a serious, pure, and age worthy offering that already offers great pleasure due to the powerful but precise fruit that lingers on the finish.”
