The World’s Greatest Value Red Bordeaux

When it comes to value for money in Bordeaux, we genuinely believe that it is impossible to beat the brilliant Lalande Pomerol wines of genius winemaker Denis Durantou. His flagship Château L’Eglise Clinet is one of the superstars of the right bank that regularly matches, or even outperforms, the likes of Petrus, Le Pin and Lafleur in blind tastings. But, only a kilometre down the road, he makes two gorgeous wines that are sold at a tiny fraction of the price of his famous Pomerol – La Chenade and Les Cruzelles.

The forward and plump La Chenade from the very good 2014 vintage has just arrived in stock and we are pleased to now be able to offer it at a remarkably low £110 per dozen bottles in bond. It is also available in magnums, double magnums and imperiales. The 2014 has recently been rated 92 points by James Suckling. To put this into context, that’s the same score as Petit Cheval 2014 – a wine that will cost you £1500 per case. If you can find a better Bordeaux wine at under £10 per bottle we’d love to know what it is!

“Plum, chocolate and cassis-bush aromas follow through to a full body, integrated tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Drink in 2020, but already a joy to taste.”

92 points, James Suckling

“With a deep purple colour and fresh plum and bramble fruit, this wine delivers on its promise from the barrel now that it is in bottle. Violets, cocoa and clove add lift and spice to the nose, which is youthful and ripe. The palate has a crunchy, refined texture from the still firm tannins softened by vibrant black cherry and plum. Hints of smoke and spice from measured oak provide sweetness and complexty and ther is a cool, ripe lift throughout the palate that leaves a savoury and moreish, long finish. This is approachable now if you open an hour before serving or give it a light decant, and will continue to improve over the next five years in bottle. Another superb effort from Denis Durantou that over-delivers on its price point.”

“Always one of the Gironde's greatest bargains. Grassy, elegant and leafy with dark berry and fennel notes that build on the palate, complemented by stylish, aromatic oak. Typically impressive winemaking.”

93 points, Tim Atkin MW

“Deep in colour with a spicy, layered nose of dense black cherry, plum and savoury toasted spices, this is powerfully aromatic and primary at this stage. Juicy and rounded in texture thanks to the weight of black fruit at the core, the fine but firm tannins frame the palate but are coated by soft, ripe fruit and lifted floral violet tones. Through the mid-palate there are layers of spicy, smoky flavour that add complexity and a touch of sweetness from balancing oak flavour. Long, youthful and spicy, this wine is approachable now with a light decant for 30 minutes and thanks to the firm-textured tannin and pure fruit length will have a superb life ahead of it. Outstanding value for money.”
