The 2017 Vintage from Kumeu River

The latest release from Kumeu River is the 2017 vintage and we are delighted to report that it is another great year for what are now widely regarded as being the finest white wines of the Southern Hemisphere.

This new release coincides with an in-depth review of Kumeu River’s Chardonnays by Neal Martin on Vinous. In this article, Neal says that “Amongst the very best Chardonnay producers in the world is Kumeu River in New Zealand. Their Chardonnays were put to the test a few years ago when several were assessed blind, intermixed with some very serious Puligny-Montrachets and Meursaults. Kumeu River triumphed to such an extent that it became almost embarrassing. And to think that you can buy an entire case of Kumeu River for the cost of a single bottle of some Grand Crus.”

He further comments “Factor in the prices that frankly make a mockery of much of White Burgundy and Napa and you are left scratching your head as to why Kumeu River is not uttered in the same breath as Leflaive, Ramonet or Marcassin.” He concludes by reviewing the 2017 vintage which he describes as “an impressive set of wines all round”. As usual, scores are at the levels of top-of-the-range Burgundies that would often cost many times the prices of these wines. 94 points for Hunting Hill and Maté’s Vineyard and 92 points for both the more forward single vineyard Coddington and the benchmark Estate Chardonnay.

We are pleased to offer all four of Kumeu River’s top Chardonnays – Estate, Coddington, Hunting Hill and Maté’s Vineyard – all of which are available for immediate delivery.

"The 2017 Estate Chardonnay has a fresh, well-defined bouquet of citrus fruit complemented by subtle scents of brioche and almond. The palate is taut and crisp on the entry with a twist of sour lemon. Very saline in the mouth, not powerful but full of tension. The aforementioned saline tang lingers on the aftertaste. Superb - one of the best Estate releases in recent years."

92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2017 Estate has a very pale colour at this early stage, with vivid, pithy, saline lemon notes jumping out of the glass. There are layers of peach and struck flint, too, making for a cool, poised nose. The palate adds layers of cream that give breadth to the fruit profile, with juicy citrus and pear over hints of vanilla and smoke. There is a lightly pithy texture and bright acidity that drives the palate through to a long finish accented with notes of grapefruit. Perfectly balanced, bright and yet generous, this is a fantastic iteration of this wine."

"The 2017 Coddington Chardonnay has a fresh, well-defined bouquet with fine mineralité and hints of white flowers. This is backward and clearly needs more time. The palate is taut and fresh with a killer line of acidity, plenty of citrus fruit and orange zest and flint-like notes toward the persistent, razor-sharp finish. This is a top-notch Coddington, but be patient."

92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

"The riper nature of the Coddington vineyard has lent richness to this wine that counters the cooler nature of the vintage. Juicy buttered peaches and notes of toast leap out of the glass on this wine. The palate is ripe and round, with orchard fruits giving real density to the palate. The toastiness of oak is subtle and integrated, lifted by bright acidity, and softened by the hints of cream and generous texture. Long and stone-fruited on the finish, this is ripe and forward but still cut by harmonising acidity."

“The 2017 Hunting Hill Chardonnay has a very well-defined bouquet of lemon curd, granite, yellow flowers and just a hint of vanilla pod that derives from the François Frères barrels. The precise, detailed palate is well defined with a crisp line of acidity and a harmonious, succinct finish of lemon curd, canned apricot and citrus fruit, all infused with light ginger and minerals. This is a complex, intellectual Chardonnay with a long, bright future ahead. A fabulous Hunting Hill."

94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

“The coastal breezes of the Hunting Hill vineyard always give a fresher, tauter balance to the wines that we associate with Puligny Montrachet, despite the site being just 3km from the much riper Coddington. The 2017 is no exception, with a flinty, floral nose of lime blossom and lemon zest giving great precision and purity to the aromas. The palate is taut and driven by vibrant acidity. At this stage, the fruit is tightly wound and dense, all citrus blossom, with struck match and light toastiness adding a layer of complexity, and a light viscosity bringing deceptively high concentration with it. This compact wine is hugely powerful despite its bracingly fresh nature. The finish is supremely long and driven, highlighting the potential to improve with age. Tasted with a decade of other Hunting Hills, this clearly has the potential to become a great wine in the next 5-7 years as it matures in bottle."

"The 2017 Maté’s Vineyard Chardonnay has a really beautiful, quixotic bouquet of apricot blossom, white peach, minerals and dandelion scents that waft temptingly from the glass. The harmonious, lightly spiced palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity and a succinct, perfectly pitched finish that offers just the right amount of sapidity. Superb."

94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2.6ha Mate's vineyard was planted in 1993, and as these vines reach maturity the quality of wine produced here continues to improve. Pale lemon in the glass, this has an explosive nose of peaches and red apples, paired with the classic struck match reduction and light toastiness that comes from this wine. The palate has great power and concentration, which expands into juicy and creamy stone fruits and light smokiness. The density and richness is tempered by waves of bright, refreshing acidity that give the wine great poise despite its power. The finish is very long, yet measured. A superb vintage for this site."
